US Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl pleads guilty to desertion

Bowe Bergdahl, the US army sergeant who was held by the Taliban in Afghanistan for five years, pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. Bergdahl is being charged with endangering his colleagues after he walked away from a remote post in Afghanistan in 2009. The maximum penalty for misbehavior before the enemy is life in prison, and the maximum sentence for desertion is five years. Bergdahl was freed in 2014 in exchange for five Taliban detainees, a move that was highly criticized by then presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
